Terms of Service

1. Who we are and what this is

These terms are an agreement between you and:

("Roam", "we", "us")

They govern your use of the Roam mobile application and related services (the "Service").

By creating an account, you accept these terms. If you don't accept them, don't use Roam.

2. What Roam is

Roam lets you share where you plan to be in the coming weeks and months with friends you have chosen, so that you can find out when your paths will cross.

Roam is not a live location service. It does not track you, and it does not know where you actually are. Everything Roam shows about you is something you typed in yourself. It is a statement of intention, not a fact of location.

We want to be clear about what follows from that:

Plans in Roam may be out of date, wrong, or abandoned. People change their minds and forget to update apps. Do not rely on Roam to determine where a person actually is, or will be. If it matters, ask them.

3. Eligibility

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You must provide accurate information when you register.
  • You may hold only one account for yourself. Don't impersonate anyone.
  • If we find that you are under 16, we will delete your account.

4. Your account

  • You are responsible for keeping your password secure.
  • You are responsible for what happens under your account.
  • Tell us promptly at privacy@joinroam.app if you believe your account has been compromised.
  • Don't share your account, and don't let someone else use it.

5. What you may not do

You agree not to:

Harm or harass others

  • Harass, threaten, stalk, intimidate, or abuse anyone.
  • Use another person's plans to follow, ambush, or surveil them. This is the behaviour Roam is most concerned about, and it will get you removed permanently.
  • Post content that is hateful, discriminatory, violent, or sexual, or that targets someone based on who they are.
  • Encourage anyone else to do any of the above.

Misrepresent yourself

  • Impersonate another person.
  • Create accounts to evade a block or a ban.
  • Use a false identity to gain access to someone's plans.

Misuse other people's data

  • Share, publish, or redistribute another user's plans, base city, or personal information outside Roam, without their consent. Plans that a friend shares with you were shared with you, not with the world.
  • Scrape, harvest, or bulk-collect data from Roam.
  • Use Roam's data to build a competing product or a dataset.

Attack the service

  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or interfere with the app.
  • Attempt to bypass our privacy controls, access controls, or rate limits.
  • Attempt to access data you are not entitled to see.
  • Introduce malware, or attempt to disrupt the service.

Break the law

  • Use Roam for any unlawful purpose, or in violation of any law that applies to you.

6. Your content

You keep ownership of what you put into Roam — your trips, notes, chapters, and profile.

You grant us a limited licence to store, process, and display that content for the sole purpose of operating the Service — meaning: to show it to the friends you chose to show it to, to calculate crossings, and to make the app work. That's it. We do not use your content for anything else, we do not sell it, and we do not license it to third parties.

This licence ends when you delete the content or your account.

You are responsible for what you write. Notes and chapter titles are free text and are visible to friends who can see that item. Don't put things in them that you wouldn't want those friends to read.

7. Privacy and other people's plans

Roam gives you granular control over who sees what — per trip, and per person. Use it.

Equally: respect what others share with you. When a friend shows you their plans, that is a private disclosure to you within Roam. Treat it accordingly. Passing it on without their consent is a breach of these terms, and depending on what you do with it, may be worse than that.

How we handle your data is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

8. Blocking and reporting

Blocking. You can block any user at any time. When you block someone:

  • The friendship between you is removed.
  • Neither of you can see the other's plans.
  • They are not told that you blocked them.
  • You can unblock them later, but the friendship does not come back automatically — you would need to reconnect.

Reporting. You can report a user for spam, harassment, a fake profile, inappropriate content, or anything else you're concerned about. Reports are confidential — the reported person is not told who reported them.

We review reports and may act on them (see section 9). We can't promise a specific outcome for every report, but we take them seriously — particularly anything involving safety.

If you feel unsafe, block first and report second. Blocking is immediate and doesn't wait for us.

9. Suspension and termination

By you: you can delete your account at any time, from within the app (Settings → Delete account). It's immediate and permanent.

By us: we may suspend or terminate your account if:

  • you breach these terms,
  • you use Roam to harass, stalk, or endanger someone,
  • you evade a block or a previous ban,
  • your account is used for fraud or unlawful activity,
  • or we are required to by law.

Where the breach is serious — particularly anything involving stalking, harassment, or the safety of another person — we may terminate immediately and without warning. For less serious breaches we will usually warn you first, where it is reasonable to do so.

If we terminate your account, you may contact privacy@joinroam.app to ask us to reconsider, and we will look at it in good faith.

10. The service is provided as it is

We work to keep Roam working well, but we can't promise it will be perfect.

  • The Service is provided "as is" and "as available".
  • We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or always available.
  • We may change, suspend, or discontinue features. If we discontinue the Service entirely, we will give you reasonable notice and an opportunity to retrieve your data.
  • Roam is currently free. If we introduce paid features in future, we will tell you clearly, and paid terms will be additional to these.

We are not responsible for the accuracy of what users tell each other. Plans are self-reported. We don't verify them.

11. Liability

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for:

  • death or personal injury caused by our negligence,
  • fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation,
  • or any liability that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.

Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected by these terms.

Subject to the above, and to the extent permitted by the law that applies to you:

  • We are not liable for what other users do — including what they do with information you chose to share with them. Roam is a tool for sharing plans with people you trust. Choose who you trust carefully, and use the privacy controls.
  • We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profits, or loss of data, arising from your use of the Service.
  • Where we are liable, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you have paid us in the 12 months before the claim (currently: nothing, since Roam is free), or (b) €100.

12. Indemnity

If your breach of these terms causes a third party to bring a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable losses arising from it — but only to the extent the claim results from your breach, and only to the extent permitted by the law that applies to you.

13. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If the changes are material, we will notify you in the app and give you the chance to review them before they take effect. If you don't accept the new terms, you can delete your account.

Your continued use after the changes take effect means you accept them.

14. Governing law and where disputes are heard

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

However: if you are a consumer resident in the European Union, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer-protection laws of the country where you live, and nothing in these terms takes those rights away from you. You may bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence, and we may bring proceedings against you only in the courts of your country of residence.

EU Online Dispute Resolution: the European Commission provides an ODR platform at https://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr. We are not obliged to and do not currently participate in alternative dispute resolution before a consumer arbitration board.

15. Miscellaneous

  • Severability: if any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.
  • No waiver: if we don't enforce a right immediately, we haven't given it up.
  • Entire agreement: these terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between us about the Service.
  • Assignment: you may not transfer your rights under these terms. We may transfer ours (e.g. in a sale of the business), but not in a way that reduces your rights.
  • Apple: if you downloaded Roam from the App Store, Apple is not a party to these terms and has no obligation to provide support for the Service. Apple's own terms also apply to your use of the App Store.
